wk11 – Activity – Fiber Art

In this week’s activity I had to get a little more involved and show off my American pride. In this week’s activity, we were to make Fiber Art to hang on a wall. You can use anything that has fiber in it which I chose to use some old T-shirts. I actually didn’t have any old T-shirts of my own because I couldn’t bring everything I have to Long Beach from my parent’s because there would be no room for it all. I ended up using my roommate’s old T-shirts because he is in this class as well. My objective was to make a Christmas stocking that looks like the American flag. I decided to make it look like an American flag because I love my country and I want to have something that shows my love for it.

I started off by cutting some shirts which were red, white, and blue. Next I had to figure out which end of the stocking I wanted the stars on. I chose to put the stars on the bottom part and have the stripes coming up towards the end of the stocking. It was kind of hard to figure out how I would do this but I just thought of using gorilla glue to bond the strips all together. In trying to bond all the strips together piece by piece I came across my first challenge. They weren’t bonding to each other and it was falling apart. At one point I felt like giving up on it. My next challenge was I then tried using q-tips dipped in glue to bond them together, but that was almost worse than before. After this I just decided to give up on the gorilla glue and I pulled out the old stapler. I stapled all of the strips together multiple times which seemed to work very well. I then connected one end to the other and I finally had something going. I finished it off by stapling the heel to the top piece. In the end, it took forever and it only turned out okay. It wasn’t great but I was able to hang it on the wall. It was a fun activity, I just wish I could be better at stuff like this.

wk10 – Activity – Geocaching

My Geocache- https://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC65ZGC&title=brick-garden&guid=58dc9944-f4fb-4262-b137-11629ed3372b

This week’s activity, just like every other activity involved us getting off of our feet and using our heads a little bit. It also included having to go out and do some treasure hunting. This treasure hunting is actually from an app called Geocaching. I have gone Geocaching prior to this activity, but I have never gone out and hid my own ‘cache’. I decided to start this activity on Wednesday when my roommate and I got off the bus on our way home from school. We had done some research on where some local caches were close to our home so we went out to find one called “Where the Sidewalk Ends”. It was pretty obvious where the cache was once we were in a close proximity of it because I noticed the concrete raising up from the ground on the sidewalk, and I could see a big gap between the dirt and concrete and thought, that’s where it must be. Turns out that I was right because I went straight for the sidewalk, reached my hand under and grabbed the cache. Inside of the cache was a log book, where we could log our names. Also there was a little toy car, a button, and a quarter. My roommate and I took the little toy car and traded it out with a dime and I also signed my name in the log book.IMG_5164 - CopyIMG_5163 - Copy

A few hours after we found the geocache, we set out to hide my own cache. We happened to find what I think was the perfect spot for a cache. It was on the corner of the street where we saw the spot. There was a raised garden around a house and a crack on the brick wall. It just so happened that behind the brick wall there was a broken brick. I was able to insert my altoids can inside of the hole and put the brick back in place. Inside of my altoids can I inserted a log book and also an iced tea bag for others to enjoy. A few hours later my cache was published and in the same day, 2 people already found it and wrote reviews! My first review was from geocache user Staace-n-Raina and she said “Yay! Cute area for a cache! CO-FTF with bvkbugger! We were looking at the posted coordinates which are not really at Cache location ( maybe check it out -the description is what gave it away) and we heard someone racing toward us on roller blades and dogs barking at him. And when he stopped cold at the corner, breathing hard from the race against time–we knew we had a fellow cacher in our midst…. 🙂 so nice to finally meet him and thank him in person for helping fix one of our caches. Great fun after a long hard day…. TFTC!” My second review was from user, bvkbugger and he wrote: “CO-FTF with StaaceNRaina!! Not only did I finally get to one quick, I was able to put some faces to other members of the community. Now to race to another FTF to meets the Druids, Foon, Ravrobin, Bajatym………etc!:) TFTC!!” I was really surprised to see that two people went out to find it so quickly. Overall it was a really great experience and I will keep my eye out in the future to see anyone who is looking over in that direction for something.IMG_5167 - CopyIMG_5168 - Copy

wk10 – Classmate Conversation – Nester Plascencia

In this week’s classmate conversation I had the opportunity to meet my fellow classmate Nester Plascencia. Nester’s origin comes from Guadalajara Mexico, but grew up locally. He was born in Linwood, California but currently lives in Paramount, California. He still lives at home because Paramount is not too far and he commutes to school every day. He is in his 2nd year at California State University, Long Beach and is majoring in Business Management because he wants to run his own business one day. He doesn’t know what kind of business yet but he says there are a lot of opportunities. He currently works at an after school program where he helps kids with homework and do little engineering activities. When he isn’t at school, or working he likes to spend his free time doing anything that involves soccer. He also likes to play tennis and watch movies. His favorite movies are Adam Sandler movies. He spoke of Mr. Deed’s, Happy Gilmore, Big Daddy, and Anger Management. His favorite sports teams are the Cowboys, Angels, and Lakers. His favorite color is blue and his favorite animal is the Cheetah. When I asked Nester our Question of the Week: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why? He responded with Dubai and I couldn’t blame him because it is an awesome place. He said his reason was so that he could ride a camel. After talking to Nester I have come to learn that he is a really cool guy and has a great sense of humor, hence the camel joke. It was great meeting Nester and I hope that we can keep in touch often.

wk9 – Activity – Transmedia Storytelling

Oh my, was this week’s activity great! In this week’s activity, the objective was to make a fictional character and give them their own goals and background and somehow correlate their story with a partner’s character. We were also supposed to make two social media accounts for the character in which I used Instagram and Twitter. My character’s name was Dustin Strongold who is best friends with Ranthony Nogymeone. My partner, Anthony and I put our minds together for this story and I hope you all enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it.

Dustin stronghold 24 years old lives in Long Beach, Ca.

“Dustin grew up on a farm in Mobile Alabama with his Ma and Pa along with an older brother and sister. Prior to moving away to California, Dustin had many duties on the farm, including: moving hundreds of hay bells, milking cows and transferring 5 gallon buckets of milk, plowing the corn field, etc. As he got older he found a new calling in life, and that was to be a personal trainer. He made this big career decision because he would find himself often bench pressing and squatting the hay bales, and curling the buckets of milk. Shortly after coming to this realization, Dustin began applying to colleges and soon got accepted to California State University, Long beach to major in kinesiology focusing in personal fitness. When he first moved to California it was a big culture shock for him, since he had never been to an actual gym, he had just lifted on the farm. This came to be not a big deal because he seemed to fit right in at the campus rec center. One of the most important things that happened to Dustin in his time at college was meeting Ranthony nogymeone in one of his general education classes. Ranthony was almost the complete opposite of Dustin because he wasn’t fit at all and in fact he looked just like a twig. The thing was that Ranthony had the same desire as Dustin to go to the gym but his parents didn’t allow because they wanted him to study to become a doctor. Ranthony’s story inspired Dustin to set his goal in life. Dustin’s goal was to open his own gym and give everyone he could the opportunity to live a happy healthy life. Shortly after setting this goal Dustin had failed one of his most important classes because he was partying too much. This made it seem like his goal was ruined and he would never be able to open his own gym. Dustin didn’t give up though, he was persistent and re-took the class and aced it because he was no longer going to parties. Instead he would study with Ranthony every night. A few years later Dustin graduated with high honors in front of his family who traveled all the way to California to watch him walk because he would be the first college graduate of the family. Things didn’t go as planned after graduating, he lost touch with Ranthony and worked at Buffalo Wild Wings as a server. 2 years later, still working at Buffalo Wild Wings, Dustin had an epiphany while sitting on his bed in his studio apartment. He thought to himself, “This isn’t what I’m supposed to be doing with my life, I was supposed to have my own gym, helping people become what they’ve always wanted.” He then fell into a great state of depression and almost drank himself to death. He was then rushed to the hospital after a neighbor found him unconscious. Dustin would wake up in the hospital the next day. And that’s when his life would forever change. When he woke up Ranthony was right there by his side because he was working as an intern while in Med School. Ranthony gave Dustin some words of encouragement, and let Dustin know that his parents still wouldn’t let him go to the gym. This angered Dustin and made him determined now to finally open his gym. When released from the hospital, Dustin went straight to the bank to take out a $500,000 loan and to receive a business license. The next day he bought an abandoned warehouse and started setting up his own gym. After a few months the gym was finally complete and looked great! He and Ranthony came up with the name “Bales to fail” referring to hay bales. The gym was beautiful, Dustin stuck with a farming theme as he had hay bales in one corner and a ton of kettle bells to simulate the farm work Dustin would do. Ranthony would become Dustin’s first client and he would often have to sneak out of his parents’ house to be able to get his training sessions in with Dustin. Not even 2 months later 7% of Long Beach’s population were clientele at Dustin’s gym. The farming theme proved to be successful and Dustin had finally achieved his ultimate goal of providing quality fitness to all people to live a happy healthy life.”

In my story I wanted Dustin to have to work hard to get to his ultimate goal and come out victorious through some tough challenges. It was really fun creating this fictional character because I felt really connected to him. He didn’t have a huge goal, it was quite practical but it was important for him to achieve it which was all he needed. Below are some pictures and status updates from Twitter and Instagram that you can see. The pictures I drew are from the important events that happened in Dustin’s life that helped him eventually reach his goal. Also pictured are some screen grabs of Ranthony’s character’s post since Dustin follows him.

wk9 – Classmate Conversation – Miguel Lopez

In this week’s classmate conversation, I was able to meet fellow classmate, Miguel Lopez. Miguel is 20 years old, and is from Carson, California. Carson is about 20 minutes from Long Beach, which allows him to still live at home. His parents are both from Mexico, and live in Carson as well. He is currently in his 2nd year and is studying Mechanical Engineering. Him and I both have that in common. Before declaring his intentions as a mechanical engineer, he thought about being an electrical or a civil engineer. In his free time away from his busy schedule, Miguel likes to play soccer, go to the gym, and hang out with his friends. When he isn’t doing any extracurricular’s or studying, he is delivering pizzas for Pizza Hut. In 5 years, after all of his hard work, he would like to be done with school and working some where as a mechanical engineer somewhere, but he isn’t quite sure where yet. Some interesting facts about Miguel are his favorite animal is a dog, specifically his own dog which is a German Shepherd and Husky mix. His favorite type of art that he has seen in the galleries is the paintings because he can find more meaning in them than anything else. It was really nice to meet you Miguel and hopefully we will keep in touch!

wk8 – Classmate Conversation – Daniel Guerrero

In this week’s classmate conversation, I had the opportunity to meet fellow classmate, Daniel Guerrero. Daniel is 20 years old and is currently in his 3rd year here at CSULB and is focusing on Bio-medical Engineering. In his field he would like to work with medical devices and prosthetics. When asked where he sees himself in 5 years he said Grad school, definitely. He works in the student recreation and wellness center here on campus while still maintaining a full-time student status. Daniel is mostly Hispanic and comes from Santa Barbara, Ca. Daniel and I are alike in many ways because in his free time he says he will do just about anything outdoors like hiking, camping, action sports, etc. On his breaks he likes to travel and currently he is planning on going to Europe and studying abroad in Spain. He has been to about 10 different U.S states and also Mexico, and Baja California. His favorite animals are Bears and turtles, specifically the Galapagos Tortoise. He thinks that it’s hilarious when a Galapagos Tortoise tries to eat a pumpkin. An interesting fact about Daniel is that he likes to read a lot of comics. Lastly, his favorite kind of art are pencil drawings because he likes looking at intricate detail.

wk8 – Activity – Writing About Art

In this week’s activity I chose to write about classmate’s Meghan Arce’s previous blog post on her artist conversation with Norax Ayala. Pasted below is her blog post and below that I will be making 9 total corrections. 3 of those are technical problems that I will correct, and 3 more will be conceptual things wrong and the other 3 will be conceptual things that are good. The objective of this activity is to give our classmate’s some feedback because our professor, Glenn doesn’t have enough time on Mondays to go through each one thoroughly.

This week I spoke to Norax Ayala who’s work was displayed in the Merlino Gallery. She is currently finishing up her last year in the masters program for print making. She decided that she wanted to major in art right after high school. She had always had an interest in art, which her mother had some influence in. She is from Southern California and came to Long Beach for grad school. She has just recently moved to Anaheim as well. Norax likes her art to be abstract and figurative. To make her art pieces, she used screen printing. She feels that it is quick and efficient. The screen printing is pixilated. This symbolized long distance relationships relying on phone communication. She worked on the pieces for two weeks for about 18 hours a day. For these pieces, Norax used repetition in color landscapes. To make the imprints, she used paper and ink. She used silver in her work because of its metallic look. It gives the viewers a different view at different angles. In a sense, there is something always coming and going. Norax’s partner had helped her in creating the center piece of her gallery. Her partner is the person she cares about most. For this piece, she used lipstick because it was nontoxic. Lipstick goes on the lips in which they go on other body parts. They put lipstick on the “lips” of their vaginas to make this print. This represents the intimacy of their relationship. Norax does a lot of feminist work and is into gender politics. She is also an advocate for the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) community. Unfortunately, Norax does not have a website at the moment. However, she does have an Instagram. Her user name is norax_darko.

  1. In the first sentence, “This week I spoke to Norax Ayala who’s work was displayed in the Merlino Gallery.” after ‘Ayala’ there should be a comma.
  2. Along with the first sentence still when she writes “I spoke to” it feels awkward to me. I feel like saying “I had the opportunity to speak to” would sound better and give the artist more respect. So the sentence should look like “This week, I had the opportunity to speak  to Norax Ayala, who’s work was….”
  3. Underlined in red, centerpiece is actually one word and not two.
  4. There was quite a bit of adjectives like: a lot, because, make, most, go, look, well, some, does, going, is, was, about. These can hurt your post because they are only emphasizing what you are already saying and do not need to be there, causing confusing sentences and poor word choice.
  5. “She worked on the pieces for two weeks for about 18 hours a day” In this sentence for is used twice making it confusing to read, instead try another word in place of for.
  6. “Lipstick goes on the lips in which they go on other body parts.” Lipstick does not go on other body parts unless you put it there, but what I think she meant was that, lipstick goes on your lips and your lips go on other body parts.
  7. Her use of sophisticated words worked well in this paper and was above average. These words include: abstract, figurative, politics, and advocate.
  8. I like how she explained why she used lipstick because it was nontoxic.
  9. She also went into depth and detail on the intimacy of the relationship between her and her partner.

“In summary, Meghan wrote a really good blog and made the artist look good which she is supposed to do, because if the artist were to stop by her page one day, she would want to see what was written about her.

Next, I will be thoroughly grading my artist conversation from last week.

Hello everyone, this week I would like to include you all in an interesting conversation with an artist I just met by the name of Norax Ayala. Norax does feminist work her at California State University, Long Beach and she is also a graduate student. She grew up in the Inland Empire and went to undergraduate school there before coming to Long beach. She has always been interested in art and decided that she wanted to major in art coming out of high school. She started doing a lot of coloring when she was younger and then transitioned to water color painting. Norax now does small work like the one I saw today in the Dr. Maxine Merlino Gallery which is inspired by feminism. Her piece “She and I” represents everything she stand for as she is very inspired by gender politics and what she cares about most, her partner. Her inspiration for her work comes from well-known artist Fransisco De Goya who does etchings.

The objective of “She and I” is to “Represent relationships, of any kind”. She says that relationships are essential to humans because we need to have emotional experiences “emotionally, physically, mentally, and sometimes even spiritually” Her body of work is to investigate aesthetics of sensuality and intimacy. Her paintings show two becoming one through the use of transparent layers. She also likes the use of lipstick, since lipstick goes on lips and lips go on other body parts, she felt it was appropriate to use lipstick as a material. Lipstick was also a good material for her to use because it is nontoxic.

Her pieces all took about 2 weeks to make which includes 18 small pieces. The red and pink ink and the lipstick create patterns on the paper that range from curved lines to full circles and blank spaces. Her focus when creating her peace was on her partner and using their experience. Norax says that the rubbing motion to transfer the ink is like the motion of what people do with their partners or with themselves.

Least to say, I was not very comfortable in my conversation with Norax because our point of views are millions of miles apart. I grew up with a very different background from her but I was easily able to identify what her piece was saying. It was interesting watching the piece slowly mix together like two partners do and watch the piece become one. Her piece easily got her point across of what she was trying to accomplish. if you all would like to see more of her work you can follow her on instagram- @norax_darko. In the pictures below you can see her two paintings become one.”

  1. The first spelling mistake I see is I spelled watercolor as two words and it is one.
  2. In the last paragraph the sentence “I grew up with a very different background from her but I was easily” there should be a comma after but.
  3. “Her body of work is to investigate aesthetics” there should be a ‘the’ before aesthetics.
  4. “Norax now does small work like the one I saw today in the Dr. Maxine Merlino Gallery which is inspired by feminism.” I should have used ‘make’ instead of ‘does’ because she makes the work, she doesn’t do it.
  5. “represents everything she stand for a” instead of stand use stands.
  6. “The red and pink ink and the lipstick” the sentence needs to be fixed because it doesn’t make sense.
  7. The use of vocabulary was nice, including the words: graduate, politics, objective, aesthetics, transparent, and appropriate.
  8. Some of the transitional phrases were average but they weren’t confusing or misleading.
  9. Understanding her point of view for the professionalism of the paper.

In Summary, the paper hit all the points and represented the artist well and what she was trying to accomplish.

Here is a snapchat of a part of my dinner from tonight! A delicious bowl of mac & cheese.

wk7 – Activity – Ephemeral Art

Don’t worry every one, it’s not a real gorilla, it’s just the first drawing I made for this activity. My friend Anthony and I were getting our tan on at the pool by the rec center and I decided to do my first drawing for our activity. I looked around me and I saw all these palm trees, and figured I had to draw something in them because he had already taken my idea of drawing someone sunbathing next to us. At first I tried to draw a monkey but that did not go well at all. A Gorilla was easier to draw for me, and that is how my first picture came about.

My next picture is a little more simple. I was bored, doing homework and I wanted to show some frustration off and with the help of snapchat’s new update I was able to do that. I used some exploding purple dust because I just wanted to explode at that point and play the new Star Wars Battelfront Beta that was released on Playstation for 4 days.

The next picture is the one I spoke of earlier that my classmate Anthony Simeone drew up when we were tanning at the pool. He made a pretty good drawing of someone sunbathing next to us. Great job Anthony! Even though he stole my idea with this one, here it is.

Last but not least we have a picture that was cleverly drawn by our classmate Aiyat Abdelhady. She drew a very fun picture from inside one of the art galleries her on campus of someone swinging on a swing smiling. This was a brilliant idea and I just have to say, great job, Aiyat!

This week’s activity was very fun because we were able to draw a bunch of silly doodles and we were also able to see a lot of our classmates lives outside of class through snapchat. I definitely loved this activity, even better than the Instagram one and I would definitely do it again. Thank you all for catching up with me this week and God bless!

wk5 – Activity – Ethnography

This week may have been my biggest challenge yet this semester. Yesterday night, I had to go the whole night without a lick of electricity. Along with not using any electricity came many challenges. You would think that not being able to use my phone would be the biggest challenge of them all but it was actually the easiest. I cannot count how many times I stubbed my toe on a corner or how much I was sweating without my fan while I was sleeping. Sleeping without a fan was by far the hardest thing, due to the fact that my apartment has no A/C. I woke up continuously through the night hot and sweaty begging for my fan. As you can see in the picture below I sleep pretty close to my fan to keep me cool through the night so that I could cuddle in my blankets.

Showering in the dark was also challenging because it was scary. The whole time I felt like someone was behind me watching me… creepy. Although there were many challenges and moments I dreaded it, I did have a lot of fun. My roommate, who is also in this class helped me out by choosing to do the ethnography the same night. For most of the night, we played Ping pong under the candle light. Even though it was very competitive and we were running every where, the candle made it feel relaxing, especially with it’s cinnamon apple scent.

After our epic ping pong battle we made some s’mores on the barbecue, which I wish I could’ve taken a picture of because they were perfect! The rest of the night was spent studying for midterms under the candle light of our bedrooms. Since my last midterm was today and I did this last night it was very difficult trying not to fall asleep early but I fell asleep early enough even though I was very uncomfortable. This was a great experience and I can definitely say the I appreciate what I have a lot more now.
